Baseball Exhibit at National Museum of American Jewish History

I recently visited the wonderful National Museum of American Jewish History in Philadelphia and saw the exhibit "Chasing Dreams: Baseball and Becoming American." I highly recommend this exhibit if you are a baseball fan because it not only highlights Jewish achievements in the game but also the progress made in making the game more diverse and inclusive.

I learned not just about Sandy Koufax and Hank Greenberg but other lesser known Jewish ballplayers throughout baseball's rich history. And of course we learn about pioneers like Jackie Robinson who broke baseball's color barrier. I must note that baseball and professional sports still have another hurdle to cross when it comes to eradicating Native American sports mascots that are highly offensive to the Indigenous population. Many of these Jewish and African-American players that made such amazing strides also played for teams like the Cleveland Indians and Atlanta Braves that stereotype Native Americans with ridiculously racist caricatures and fan behavior. Our society has a long way to go until we respect the first peoples who should not be subjected to stereotypical sports mascots.
